The History News Show will pause for a few months, until I finish my Master’s degree in History. I will be back at the end of Summer 2017.
This episode, we start with some follow up about Goebbels’ secretary and about Otzi the Iceman. Then we hear about a pan-European police operation that targeted antiquities traffickers, we reconsider the origins of Western civilisation, and we also reconsider the time of the death of the Mayan civilisation.
Also: some pictures of two famous Celtic archaeological finds, a controversy about Germany’s colonial past in Africa, a new book about an Ancient Arthurian Kingdom, we touch on Poland’s World War II controversy and finally, it’s Black History Month in February!

This week, we go through some follow-up on Colombia, on China’s Terracotta Army, on Iraqi Kurdistan, and on Nimrud. We’ll hear a call to protect antiquities the world over, Swiss Customs seize some looted artefacts, a new ancient Egyptian city is discovered near Abydos, we find the boundaries of the Plymouth Pilgrims colony, and the first tomb of Saint Olaf is found in Norway.
Also, we wonder on the extent of Nazi influence in Post-War Germany, we see some pretty cool 3D virtual tours in Turkey, we find out about a fake Mexican head, we see the restoration of a destroyed 17th century world map, and we hear about the Pompeii exhibition of erotic Roman frescoes!

This week, we follow up on the Antikythera Shipwreck, where they found a skeleton, on the Great Plague of London’s cause(s) and on Parks Canada’s confirmation of HMS Terror’s discovery. We also discover a huge pool in the desert at Petra, Otzi the Iceman was murdered 5 millennia ago, but he now speaks again! A Nazi time capsule is dug up in Poland, a Burned Biblical Scroll is readable again, we find evidence of looted antiquities passing through Turkey to the US, and we read secret documents about one of Britain’s most successful spies!
Also, the Obama Administration settles Native American lawsuits, the world’s oldest library is renovated in Fez, Morocco, and as promised, I debrief you on the Grand Opening of the long awaited National Museum of African American History and Culture.
