On this special episode of History Behind the News, we explore the origins of the FARC guerrillas and the Colombian Conflict (1964-2016).

After the recent rejection in a referendum of the Peace Accord between Colombia and its most important revolutionary group, the FARC, we go back to the causes of the conflict, and we try to understand how Colombia got to this point in its history.

Topics include: “La Violencia” Civil War (1948-1958), the creation of the FARC guerrilla army, the “Dark Side” of the FARC (terrorism, crimes, atrocities) and the Drug Trade, the Paramilitaries, the Political and Military conflict with the Colombian government, and the Peace Process.

I will give you the historical background on this subject, from the origins of the North’s nuclear ambitions in the aftermath of the Second World War and the beginning of the Cold War, to the development of nuclear reactors from the 1960s, and the first nuclear bomb tests in the early 21st century.

In this special episode of History Behind the News, we attempt to slice through the media hyperbole by bringing you some historical context to the Pope-Patriarch meeting, which took place on February 12, 2016, in Havana, Cuba.

We’ll take a look at the origins of the Great Schism of 1054, the division of the original Christian Church along East-West lines, which resulted in the establishment of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches that we know today.

Also, we’ll run through the various attempts to heal this rift, focusing on the modern efforts to bring reconciliation to the two sides, so as to see the latest meeting between the Pope and the Patriarch of Moscow with the long lens of history.
