In this special episode of History Behind the News, we attempt to slice through the media hyperbole by bringing you some historical context to the Pope-Patriarch meeting, which took place on February 12, 2016, in Havana, Cuba.

We’ll take a look at the origins of the Great Schism of 1054, the division of the original Christian Church along East-West lines, which resulted in the establishment of the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches that we know today.

Also, we’ll run through the various attempts to heal this rift, focusing on the modern efforts to bring reconciliation to the two sides, so as to see the latest meeting between the Pope and the Patriarch of Moscow with the long lens of history.

The History News Show presents a selection of headlines from the fields of history, archaeology and anything to do with the past.
